HDH Capital Management has confirmed that Pritzker Prize-winning architect Ryue Nishizawa is set to design the follow-up to the brand’s first Shishi-Iwa House in Karuizawa, Japan. Slated to open in 2021, the new outpost will pay homage to traditional Japanese residential design with a shaku-kan grid system, just like the previous Shishi-Iwa House which was conceived by Shigeru Ban for HDH earlier this year.
Located in the woodlands of the Karuizawa mountain resort in the country’s Nagano Prefecture, the new facility will promote a connection to nature through an emphasis on sustainability and human scale. Composed largely of locally sourced hinoki cypress, the design will comprise ten interconnected pavilions, linked via an open corridor with garden courtyards installed between each unit. Eight guestrooms of varied sizes will be spread across the structure, featuring interiors punctuated with curated collections of screen paintings and silk scrolls from the 17th Japanese masters to complement the traditional architecture. The unique property will also be home to common spaces like the lounge, library, tearoom, and bathhouse.
“Guests can enjoy the surrounding landscape, gardens, and architecture together by walking from one pavilion to the other, or by staying in their rooms,” architect Nishizawa says. “Every detail in the project will be built by traditional Japanese wooden architectural principles.”
