Emerging from a four-year renovation, Southern Ocean Lodge—Baillie Lodges’ flagship property—has reopened on the coast of South Australia’s Kangaroo Island.
Led by the property’s original architect Max Pritchard and his team, the new iteration of Southern Ocean Lodge is defined by organic finishes and curved lines.
Twenty-three suites along the coastline were reoriented to face the southeast, and now boast uninterrupted views of the coastal wilderness. All suites feature private decks, an EcoSmart fireplace, and sink-in bathtub.
The Great Room, perched on the island’s limestone cliffs, now has a wet-edge pool, while new spaces in the Southern Spa allow for three treatment rooms, a gymnasium, sauna, and hot and cold plunge pools.
Also new to the property is the Ocean Pavilion, designed to be a single four-bedroom owner’s residence or two separate two-bedroom suites.
Furthermore, Southern Ocean Lodge now sets new benchmarks for environmental sustainability. The design integrates rainwater water capture, solar power generation, smart building materials, a remote-controlled sprinkler system, and 45,000 biodiverse native plants propagated onsite and planted in a natural buffer from the wilderness.
Baillie Lodges cofounder Hayley Baillie partnered with a number of local suppliers, including F&B producers, artists, and designers. “We have a chance now to show the world the incredible depth and diversity of the regional Southern Australia and Kangaroo Island offering as it stands today and into the future, and we’re looking forward to working in rewarding partnerships with local communities once again,” Baillie says.
