The latest outpost in the Room Mate portfolio, Room Mate Gorka, marks the brand’s arrival in the Basque Country of Spain. The opening is also the brand’s second in less than a month, following the launch of the Room Mate Bruno in Rotterdam. On track to roll out 11 new units by the end 2019, the company currently oversees a lineup of 24 hotels.
José Manuel Fernández and Germán Álvarez of Cuarto Interior led the design of the new property, which boasts a protected façade that serves as a fixture of the Plaza de Gipuzkoa in the heart of Donostia-San Sebastián. The building’s location influenced the architecture with three configurations spanning the 33 guestrooms, most of which are equipped with terraces. Comfortable yet sophisticated, the design includes references to La Concha beach through elements such as glass panes that partition the reception and the bar. Onsite amenities include a fitness center, breakfast room, meeting space, and bar.
“We loved designing the new Room Mate Gorka because from the very beginning [Room Mate Group president and founder] Kike Sarasola had a very clear idea of the hotel that he wanted for his guests,” the designers say. “Kike gave us complete freedom to create the interior concept of the hotel.”
