Designed by Rhode Island-based Ocean House Design Group in collaboration with the owners, the Gates family, the Spicer Mansion is an eight-room hotel in a converted mansion in Mystic, Connecticut opening in May, which features historic Victorian design elements including intricate parquet floors, grand moldings, and ornate Gilded Age handpainted ceilings.
“Mystic is a remarkable community, with Spicer Mansion bringing a unique set of qualities and characteristics to the Ocean House Management collection,” says Daniel A. Hostettler, president and group managing director of Ocean House Management. “Our intention with Spicer Mansion is to cater to a well-heeled traveler in a destination that, up until now, has been dominated by the family market. Our reputation for service is at the forefront of this property’s DNA.”
Originally built in 1853 by sea captain Elihu Spicer Jr., the newly restored Spicer Mansion pays tribute to its Victorian era architecture while providing guests with modern conveniences. Each of the guestrooms has been crafted to resemble an elegant private residence, and features a color palette of pewter, blue, and gray tones, which are carried throughout the hotel. Features in the rooms include ample living and workspaces, and plush furniture.
Amenities on the property include a restaurant helmed by chef Jennifer Backman, which offers a six-course locally sourced seasonal tasting menu. In an effort to replicate the dining experiences of yesteryear, guests are invited to enjoy cocktails and canapés in the grand salon before being escorted into one of the hotel’s three dining rooms, which feature Italian hemstitch linens and Baccarat crystal.
Located behind a bookcase and down a set of stairs, Room No. 9 Speakeasy is a cocktail bar and cigar lounge featuring mahogany, leather, and velvet furnishings, original brick floors, and copper ceilings.
