Principal Hospitality has launched its debut property, the Federal, in Brunswick, Maine. Located in the city’s downtown area near Bowdoin University, the new hotel occupies the site of what was previously the Daniel and Captain Daniel Stone Inn.
Portland, Maine-based designer Annie Kiladjian of Annie K Designs reinvigorated the 19th-century structures with an aesthetic inspired by the scenery of mid-coast Maine. “I kept some of the historical features intact while adding comfort and style to the overall look,” Kiladjian says. “I used colors and styles that would not get old and not have a date stamp to them. I love to design for the long run, and I try to be simple in my design aesthetic but wow them by the overall vignettes I have created.”
Guests are welcomed in a two-level mezzanine lobby that initiates the narrative of old-meets-new. Warm wood surfaces are offset by smooth black tones expressed via the reception desk, railings, and a towering wall of maritime furnishings. A total of 30 guestrooms are offered across the hotel’s two buildings—with four premium rooms and two luxury suites located within the Federal House, the former residence of Captain Daniel Stone. The East Wing, the larger of the two structures, will comprise the property’s remaining king and queen accommodations.
The Federal is also home to a pair of meeting rooms: the 50-person Anchor Room and the 35-person Chart Room. A farm-to-table restaurant is also set to open onsite next month.
