London-based studio Saar Zafrir Design has unveiled its first hospitality project in Paris: the ReMIX Hotel. Situated along the Rive Droite, the nostalgic urban retreat colorfully channels the 1980s through a mischievous, playful lens. The interior design is inspired largely by the 1984 Alphaville hit “Forever Young,” as well as its 2009 remix by Jay-Z and Mr. Hudson to balance old and new.
“My team spent a great deal of time trawling through flea markets and vintage stores, searching for original pieces from the ’80s to give the hotel a real sense of place,” says Saar Zafrir. “Our mission is to give guests an experience whilst visiting the ReMIX Hotel, for them to have fun and escape the reality of today, if only for a little while.”
Contrasting colors, textures, and custom furnishings animate the hotel’s interiors. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a reception desk composed of original cassette tapes and a marble top, while the self-check-in area is located within a repurposed arcade machine. From wallpaper to rugs, nearly all furniture for the hotel is bespoke and works to amplify the various pop cultural references.
A medley of plush velvet chairs and sofas in mustard yellow, mint green, and dusty pink are installed against the lobby’s polished tiled walls. Accented by exposed concrete elements, the lobby is also lined with traditional parquet floors and original marble-topped tables. Inside the posh lobby bar and casual dining lounge, shiny brass trumpet light fixtures complement the emerald- and brass-tiled bar, while a wall of stacked vintage analog televisions serve as the focal point.
The flexible coworking area is outfitted with teal panels and pearl tiling that offset wood tables and upholstered leather seating. The 1980s theme reaches its peak at the onsite gaming room, where arcade games from the decade are featured against custom rollerblade wallpaper. Game-inspired artwork, monochrome chessboard floors and ceilings, and traditional black French paneling further establish a sense of nostalgia.
Each of the ReMIX Hotel’s 259 guestrooms are anchored by an emerald velvet bed and headboard installed before dimpled charcoal gray walls. Acoustic foam ceilings contrast parquet floors, while details like vintage rotary phones in powder pink, cobalt blue cassette players, neon green signage, and wallpaper illustrated with lyrics to “Forever Young” infuse the hotel’s signature cheekiness.
