The luxury 5-Star Toscana Resort Castelfalfi recently reopened in Tuscany. Embedded in the Italian countryside, the property, now under new ownership, was designed by Milan-based design firm CaberlonCaroppi to reposition the retreat in a more contemporary context.
“We were inspired to impart a strong sense of character into the space, being especially mindful of the details and materials throughout. We wanted guests to feel completely immersed in a luxury, modern, yet historical place,” says Chiara Caberlon of CaberlonCaroppi. “The key elements on which the project was based upon include creating a careful balance between space, light, shapes, colors, textures and patterns. A meticulously chosen combination of these elements has allowed us to a revival of the existing environments of the property, creating new paths of design and emphasizing the strengths of the already existing structure.”
Handsome wood paneling lines the walls of the entrance, which are outfitted with backlit shelving that showcases historic paraphernalia. Central upholstered benches evoke a sculptural curved form below a cascading light fixture descending from a rippling, reflective ceiling in the lobby as well.
In addition to the onsite vineyard and numerous outdoor excursions, a lineup of cozy F&B options demonstrates a timeless modernism. Bar Ecrù is distinguished by a range of seating—from a sprawling banquette to a sinewy sofa—wrapped in textured upholstery, while Il Rosmarino, La Vida del Sale, and pool bar Giglio Blu are each defined by an unfussy, alfresco sensibility.
Modern forms abound again across the accommodations, where textured wallcoverings complement the tactility of wood panels and various upholstery. Bucolic vistas framed in each window are rendered again upon hypnotic headboards that depict the countryside, flanked by a pair of mirrors. Innovative heating and cooling systems powered by wood chips also equip the resort with a new, more sustainable framework. “The design of the hotel was made to honor the estate’s original structure, its stunning location in the Tuscan landscape, while paying homage to the future of the property as we continue to introduce guests to the beauty of Tuscany,” adds CaberlonCaroppi’s Ermanno Caroppi.
