London-based firm Twelve Architects is set to spearhead the overhaul of Bodmin Jail in Cornwall, England into a new hotel and tourist attraction. First developed in the 18th century, the Grade-II property will be restored to house 63 guestrooms. It is slated to debut as an Interstate Europe Hotel unit by 2019.
Weathered stone walls will remain intact, while a new glazed roof will be installed over the hotel atrium to flood the historic interior with daylight. Former cells will be knocked through and expanded to host new accommodations. Twelve Architects will also confront the site’s growing bat population by creating a new bat house for the creatures to roost and mate without disturbing guests.
