The Venice V hotel is slated to open later this month in Venice Beach, California. Housed within the former Waldorf building, the property—which will be the sole beachfront lifestyle hotel in the area—will pay homage to the landmark’s Hollywood legacy, while also channeling the effortless cool of the bohemian coastal community.
“As a lifelong Venice local, this community’s maverick vibe is in my blood,” says Tima Bell, founder and partner of Los Angeles-based Relativity Architects, which is designing the project. “The design direction and collaborations with local artists—many I’ve known since childhood—exude the authenticity of place that will engage locals as well as visitors.”
Venice V will accentuate the 1915 historical landmark’s many period details, including exposed interior riveted steel beams, the central grand staircase, and brass and mahogany surfaces. The building is also home to the oldest operable elevator west of the Mississippi River, and it has been carefully restored with etched bronze doors.
Upon arrival, a mural of Venice visionary Abbot Kinney made entirely from skateboard wheels will be showcased in the lobby to immediately instill a sense of place. The hotel’s 750 square feet of flexible, meeting, event, and performance space will also include a former basement theater transformed into an open coworking hub.
Ranging from 200 to 560 square feet, accommodations feature three configurations that draw inspiration from the beach bohemian lifestyle, cozy artists’ studios, and skate and surf culture, respectively. Each spacious room and suite overlooks the Pacific Ocean and boasts hardwood floors, platform beds, and walk-in showers. Seven expansive rooftop bungalows will also crown the hotel with options apt for both short- and long-term stays. Varying from 270 to 470 square feet, the idyllic, intimate hideaways are outfitted with oversized showers, original artwork, and kitchen nooks.
