The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc. is honoring Isadore Sharp with the 2013 International Horatio Alger Award. As the founder and chairman of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Sharp will be feted during the 66th Annual Horatio Alger Awards Induction Ceremonies, which will take place April 4-6th in Washington, DC.
The International Horatio Alger Award is presented to one exceptional Canadian individual who has persevered through adversity to become a successful entrepreneur or community leader. As the son of Polish immigrants, Sharp grew up in Toronto’s Jewish ghetto and moved 15 times by the age of 16. After working in construction, Sharp founded the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, which he developed over the next five decades.
“The association is proud to salute Isadore Sharp-a man of exceptional achievement. We are grateful to him for joining in our efforts to enable more and more young people to achieve their dreams through higher education,” says Paul Anthony Novelly, president and CEO of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Inc.
Recipients of this award become lifelong members of the Horatio Alger Association in the U.S. and Canada. Past winners include Dominic D’Alessandro, David Foster, Wayne Gretzky, Rebecca MacDonald, the late G. Wallace F. McCain, former Canadian prime minister M. Brian Mulroney, Jim Pattison, Robert J. Schlegel, Prem Watsa, and Rick Waugh.
