The popular Figlmüller restaurant in Wien, Austria has emerged from a recent upgrade by Vienna-based firm BWM Architekten. To complement its traditional Viennese cuisine, the space now showcases materials like wood and tiling that are customary to Viennese restaurants paired with modern elements to establish an atmosphere that feels both familiar and contemporary.
This interplay of innovation and tradition characterizes the redesign of the nearly 4,900-square-foot, 250-seat dining room. New voids in interior walls expand sightlines and increase seating capacity, while new glazing links the restaurant and sidewalks. Brass light fixtures and stained Viennese wickerwork reinforce the balance of old and new, and original stone floors are supplemented with Red Adnet marble against a new warm cherrywood bar. Additionally, dark green tiles have been installed along the backbar wall and across the ceiling, and the restaurant’s new section sports rustic vintage seating, along with oiled herringbone parquet and dark green Aurisina marble floors.
