Madrid-based Estudio DIIR has completed Spanish footwear brand Diplomatic‘s latest store. Located in Alcobendas, Spain, the 645-square-foot storefront reimagines the retail space as a theatrical experience where the monotony of its rectangular interior is defied.
“We are inspired by spaces that, through a very geometric gesture, are able to leave a mark,” says Estudio DIIR cofounder Iñigo Palazón del Pino. “Each gesture is designed with the sole purpose of generating surprise or something unexpected. In this way, we provoke alterations in the guests’ feelings and we make them be captivated by the space.”
An interactive screen and displays punctuate the arrival experience, but the pièce de résistance is the circular heart of the interior. A decompressed ceiling is outfitted with an enormous dome that washes the space and the footwear on display in warm lighting. Campaspero limestone and mortar coatings anchor the materiality, while neutral tones empower the geometric focal points to command attention. “We did not want the color to compete with the stylistic resource of the geometry,” Palazón adds. “Geometric expressiveness is counterbalanced by calm tones, thus emphasizing the importance of the product.”
