Hong Kong-based One Plus Partnership’s newly designed Haikou Gaoxingli Insun Cinema—situated on the north coast of China’s Hainan Island—draws inspiration from the surrounding South China Sea.
Avoiding a direct translation of the ocean, One Plus’ concept eschews a blue color palette for a sandy, brick material. The bricks are placed to look like waves, layered in such a way that they can be seen from any angle, with no piece appearing to be the same length.
While the bricks are rough on the surface, the overall atmosphere is soft and ambient thanks to thoughtfully positioned lights hidden in nooks.
The bricks, swooping in various directions, gracefully curve up into tables, chairs, and countertops that resemble the tips of ocean waves.
Inside the auditoriums
The first auditorium is swathed in a dimensional ceiling mural with colors and textures resembling a fresh piece of wood, connecting the room to the lobby outside.
The second auditorium, meanwhile, is wrapped in paneled edges in colors reminiscent of tiger lilies and rough bricks, illuminated by lights that run from the floor to ceiling.
