Bernheimer Architecture has unveiled the design of a new shop for skincare, fragrance, and candle brand MALIN+GOETZ.
Located in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, the store’s design pulls from the city’s long-established history as the center of the film industry.
The Art Deco façade of a former auto body repair shop on Sunset Boulevard was preserved in its conversion to the MALIN+GOETZ location.
Inside, a white terrazzo bar serves as the centerpiece of the space, flanked by natural white oak shelving that lines the walls. Wood cabinets are a visual counterpart in the ceiling, where a preserved wood truss structure from the building’s original design is revealed, adding character to the space.
A skylight above allows sunlight to flood the interior, further enhancing the warm and inviting atmosphere.
Much of the interior aesthetic is informed by the 1990s indie classic film Pulp Fiction. At the end of the long space, an arched threshold opens up to a semi-private area, which invites visitors to explore further. In the same way that the briefcase in Pulp Fiction served as a lure for its characters—with its inside glowing but never quite revealing its contents to the audience—the store’s rear lounge entices customers to discover what isn’t immediately evident.
The Silver Lake outpost debuts with another location in Venice, representing the third and fourth incarnations of MALIN+GOETZ in the LA area. Bernheimer Architecture previously worked on the brand’s Larchmont store, as well as eight other outlets across the U.S. and Hong Kong.
“I’ve valued our long-standing relationship with MALIN+GOETZ as the company has evolved from the earliest days selling product out of a Manhattan storefront through its growth to Silver Lake, Abbott Kinney, and beyond,” says Andrew Bernheimer, founder and principal of the Brooklyn-based firm. “MALIN+GOETZ values good design that ultimately supports the brand’s customers as they also become valuable additions to their neighborhoods.”
