10 Design—part of Egis’ Architecture Line—has unveiled a new retail shopping center in the Tianning District of Changzhou, China.
Spanning more than 2,490,000 square feet, MixC Changzhou occupies six above-ground floors and one underground floor.
MixC Changzhou draws inspiration from the region’s tea culture, featuring multisensory spaces and experiences that create a journey through tea and water. “It invites the public to appreciate the poetry and philosophy hidden in the beauty of things,” says Chin Yong Ng, retail design principal at 10 Design.
Upon entry, visitors are greeted by light-colored stone details affixed in an angled vertical pattern to emulate tea leaves. From floor to ceiling, the interior is filled with leading lines that mimic the natural movement of hills and water.
With two large wings and a central lobby, the design features light, bright finishes outfitted with curved void edges and modern recessed lighting, with wave-like viewing balconies that evoke the rolling hills of surrounding tea mountains. Two illuminated glass bridges form the centerpiece of the space.
Natural light pours through several skylights, where leaf-shaped aluminum roof panels act as shading devices and simultaneously create distinctive patterns on the atrium floor.
The fourth-floor Cloud Atrium was crafted as a breakout space for shoppers, with a ceiling that mimics tea leaves floating on water. Meanwhile, the basement food court juxtaposes reflective metal paneling on the ceiling against wood and stone finishes of the central kiosks.
“Every level of this project was designed to give shoppers a sense of calm and serenity from the moment they arrive,” says design principal Lukasz Wawrzenczyk. “The design for MixC Changzhou is rooted in the local culture and we’re proud to create a new urban landmark that elevates the quality of life for the citizens of Changzhou.”
