Montalba Architects has kicked off a new restoration project for one of Los Angeles’ most iconic buildings: 9720 Wilshire Boulevard. Originally designed by late architect Edward Durell Stone and completed in 1962, the eight-story commercial structure will receive a refresh that will impact its façade, interior lobbies, and common areas.
“The building is essentially a Los Angeles landmark, so it was important that we respect, and take into consideration, its history when making any refinements,” says founding principal David Montalba. “Keeping this in mind, our intent was to elevate what made the building iconic through specific design additions, like turning the original plaza fountain into a sunken garden to bring light and life into the previously unused basement.”
The central fountain found in the heart of the building’s plaza will be replaced with a circular lightwell to support daylighting efforts and create a new focal point. Original elements—including the decorative terrazzo surfaces of the plaza—will be thoughtfully restored in collaboration with a historic consultant.
The project is slated for completion in fall 2022.
