Van Stapele has been baking its signature chocolate cookies in Amsterdam since 2013. Upon deciding to move into a larger space, the bakeshop entrusted locally based Studio Modijefsky to craft a concept that ensured none of Van Stapele’s charm was lost in the expansion.
The design of the new storefront captures a timelessness with natural materials in a palette inspired by the browns and creams of the famous cookie. These neutral tones are further emphasized via warm brown wood, antique brass, and intricate detailing set against a weathered stucco wallpaper backdrop.
An open layout transports customers into the cookie-making process, evoking a Willy Wonka-style atmosphere. Upon entering, the baking area is immediately visible through an expansive glass wall, showcasing marble baking tables and an oven wall adorned in antique brass.
A custom display cabinet runs the width of the store, featuring a conveyer belt that rolls the cookies into the shop, while the store’s focal point is a long counter topped with white beige marble.
Overhead, the ceiling is adorned with a series of stepped ceiling cassettes, complemented by antique mirrors and softly lit sphere lights. Underfoot, bespoke terrazzo tiling, in a mix of brown marbles in cream-colored cement, form a fan pattern.
