Project: 520 West 28th Street condos, New York
For Zaha Hadid Architect’s first completed building in New York, a one-of-a-kind living experience is not only expected, but encouraged through a design “that has a positive influence on anyone visiting the High Line or nearby Chelsea,” says Ed Gaskin, the firm’s senior associate. The 11-story, 39-unit residential building is an urban escape with curved floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies and terraces that overlook the elevated park. In homage to New York, the façade “features handcrafted interlocking steel chevrons, which reference the spirit of Chelsea’s industrial past while continuing the tradition with New York’s historic architecture,” he explains. Discrete volumes flow into each, giving the spaces their own distinct identity and offering multiple perspectives and views of the neighborhood. “For residents,” says Gaskin, “it is like a sculptural work of art you can live in.”
