Over the course of 85 years in business, OBMI has fostered a respected, longstanding legacy. The architecture firm operates 10 offices across the globe and, most recently, launched interior design studio UCO Studio to round out its offerings. Here, Dallas-based UCO Studio principal Eric D. Ullmann shares what to expect from the new venture.
What led OBMI to launch UCO Studio?
Eric D. Ullmann: The projects with the most compelling and cohesive narratives are a result of the synergies discovered during the architecture and interior design process, and so launching an interior design studio was a natural evolution in the firm’s strategic growth. Preserving OBMI’s eight-decade legacy of design excellence, it was essential to align with the right collaborative approach while optimizing the natural positive tension of the design process through a shared design philosophy.
I have had success working with OBMI since 2015, where we discovered our processes were both rooted in storytelling and a shared focus on high-caliber projects. UCO and OBMI hit the ground running with a shared perspective that complements the creative process. Our projects and clients alike have benefited from the integrated approach through a more efficient and effective delivery.

Why was now the right time?
EDU: As leadership, we have witnessed the need for a single trusted advisor, consolidating efforts from the development team while envisioning the project in more efficient and cohesive manner. We also learned that independent ventures for each studio—like collaborating with outside firms—would be further strengthened with a greater understanding and appreciation.
The completion of St. Regis Bermuda Resort was a significant accomplishment and realization of opportunities that lie ahead. We all experienced firsthand each other’s passion, artistry, and commitment. The architects were able to highlight their imaginative approach to honoring history and dedication to preserving the natural surroundings of the project. Our interior designers crafted a contemporary expression of the rich culture and traditions through immersive journeys and identifiable spaces.
