Higher Learning
the d. school-the Institute of Design at Stanford. I just
returned from the Innovation Masters Series, where we were immersed in
the philosophy of ‘design thinking.’IDEO’s David Kelley and David
Beach, Stanford professor of mechanical engineering, were both great
creative minds and very inspiring.

Designer
Patricia Urquiola. There’s a handcrafted feel to her work that sets her apart and fascinates me.

Family Member
My grandmother. She spent hour upon hour teaching me to knit,
sew, crochet, and bead. It was through her that I developed a love for
textiles and for creating.

Architecture
I grew up in Halifax, North Carolina, where there are many
historically significant buildings from the 1700s. My first job was at a
state historic site, giving tours. The job taught me about
architecture, interiors, furnishings, and decorative arts that sparked
an interest in what became my career.

Employer
J.W. ‘Bill’Marriott. I’ve had the good fortune to work directly
with him for years. I always learn from him. He’s a true legend.
