Located in a secluded, peaceful outdoor space in the town of Bisei, Okayama Prefecture in Japan is a whimsical constellation of boldly colored geometric structures—a fresh take on tea ceremony houses inspired by the galactic universe beyond. “The site is surrounded by rolling hills and distant mountains and offers views of a spectacular landscape,” says Moriyuki Ochiai, architect, designer, and founder of Tokyo-based Moriyuki Ochiai Architects, adding that the project also honors Eisai, a Japanese Buddhist priest born in the Okayama Prefecture who is credited with introducing green tea to Japan.
Integrated into the terrain, the open arrangement forms a stage for a variety of indoor-outdoor events and activities, while the red, white, blue, and yellow volumes feature “polygonal openings from which [one can take] in nature and the starry night sky,” Ochiai says. Mirrors placed on the exterior walls further enhance the experience and reflect “the ever-changing outdoor environment, like the water surface of rice paddies scattered across Bisei,” he says.
