Interior design firm: Nina+Co, London
The details: The White Building, a former cocoa roasting factory in the Hackney Wick section of London, is now home to the breezy zero-waste eatery Silo. Overlooking a nearby canal, Silo features a palette of upcycled waste and other natural or biodegradable materials that offsets the post-industrial ethos of the structure it calls home. “We aim to close the loop, thinking in a circular way, considering where things have come from and where they’ll end up,” says Nina+Co founder Nina Woodcroft. Harnessing innovative materials and new technologies, diners are greeted by a host stand made from discarded timber shards laminated into a sculptural tree trunk beneath suspended pendants resembling foraged seaweed. Set on natural cork floors, dining tables topped with charcoal composed of recycled plastic packaging, an L-shaped bar comprising reformed polyester packaging and a recycled leather face, and furniture made from mycelium (the vegetative part of a fungus) round out the environmentally innovative design. “Beauty, luxury, and sustainability are not mutually exclusive,” says Woodcroft.
