The iconic Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills recently emerged from a $33 million renovation. "It wasn’t to be trendy," explains designer Sue Firestone, who handled the 285 guestrooms and suites, ballroom, and Windows Lounge (the restaurant Culina, Modern Italian was done by EDG).
With the hotel’s entertainment-oriented clientele from New York or London, Firestone went with a high-end residential look with a touch of glamour. She infused the rooms with custom wood furniture, mirrored wall paneling, white-gold chinoiserie headboards, and a color palette of tan and champagne, and either teal or coral, depending on the room. "I wanted it to feel more vibrant inside," says Firestone, founder of Santa Barbara, California-based SFA Design.
And since the owner has a penchant for succulents (he owned a flower shop), Firestone subtly brought the outdoors in through carpets and fabrics with leaf- and flower-inspired motifs, and in the suites, headboards boast a handpainted flower. And the Windows Lounge, which has long been a gathering place for the Hollywood crowd, is done with a color palette of green and brown, a backlit photographic glass bartop of succulent foliage, and a green onyx fireplace.
Yet the standouts are the signature suites. The Presidential East has a masculine, bachelor pad-type feel with clean lines, contemporary furniture, bold artwork, and a color palette of teal and beige, while the Presidential Suite West is more feminine, thanks to canopy beds, crystal sconces and chandeliers, and a hand-tufted carpet with an over-scaled butterfly motif. And its furnishings give a nod to Hollywood glamour: there are mirrored desks and coffee tables, cream and black lacquered nightstands and cabinets, and a silver leaf dining table.
"My main goal was to create a look that would not to be compared to anywhere," Firestone says.
