Martin Brudnizki Design Studio is set to unveil the first phase of restorations at Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino this June. Upgrades to the coastal property include a revamped pool area, the new Splendido Grill, and the Baronessa Suite. Both public and private spaces will be bonded through a palette of locally sourced materials that showcases the craftsmanship of the Italian Riviera and organically blends traditional and contemporary vernaculars.
“Splendido is an icon, and so our approach to the project was similar to that of a portrait painter, creating a design centered on the building and one that is as much a restoration as a rejuvenation,” Martin Brudnizki says. “We looked to the local flora and fauna and architecture for influences while also championing Ligurian craft to ensure the rooms felt luxurious as well as contextual. It was important the design situates guests in Portofino, creating that comforting feeling of being at a friend’s holiday home while allowing them to experience the beauty, art, and life of this magical place.”
Overlooking the Ligurian Bay, a cinematic pool will be reimagined with deep blue-green tones complementary to the sparkling waters below. Hues of pink, red, and white stone embedded with marine mosaics will also animate the sun terrace. Handpainted green and white tile frontages—inspired by Albissola ceramics found in guestrooms—will also adorn Splendido Grill. Set against a backdrop of lush foliage, the eatery will feature a palette of acorn green and terracotta as well as red-flecked composite stone floors. After sunset, vibrant, striped glass pendant lights will illuminate the terrace furnished with piped cushions in coral and green tones.
The signature Baronessa Suite will comprise a king bedroom, separate living room, and private terrace. Enchanting frescoes and curated objets d’art will nod to the heritage of the noble Palazzos of the region, while rich fabric wallcoverings will opulently contrast flooring detailed with a mosaic border finish. Antique furnishings will be reupholstered in bespoke fabrics and set beside eye-catching pieces, such as carved timber side tables or petite vanity tables equipped with matching footstools. A grandiose carved timber headboard depicting unfurling agapanthus leaves will command focus in the bedroom as well.
