Grupo Gitano, known for its tropical dining experiences, has debuted its U.S. flagship at New York’s South Street Seaport.
Following a series of summer pop-ups on Governors Island, GITANO NYC is now a permanent destination where the brand’s signature aesthetic comes to life. Designed by Grupo Gitano founder James Gardner and his team, the space blends the lush, bohemian spirit of Tulum with the dynamic energy of Lower Manhattan.
Behind the design
Drawing inspiration from the verdant landscapes of the Yucatán and the grandeur of Spanish Colonial architecture, the space is defined by soaring 30-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass doors, and a rich interplay of handcrafted Mexican design elements and antique accents. These features are paired with a rich material palette of indoor greenery, rustic wooden beams, and intricate tilework.
Signature elements—including a large disco ball, mirrored bar arches, ambient lighting, and coffered mirrored ceilings—allow the venue to transition from an intimate dining experience to a high-energy nightlife destination.
Craftsmanship at GITANO NYC
Sustainability and craftsmanship are central to the design. Repurposed wooden banquettes and planters from Tulum have been revitalized with tung oil, while furniture and architectural details—including zapote wood tables and hand-laid black and white cement tiles from Merida—showcase the artistry of both Mexican and New York artisans.
The space also features dramatic rose gold rope chandeliers handmade in Merida and salvaged gold architectural columns from upstate New York.
