Barcelona’s Casa Degli Italiani, a Renaissance-style landmark built in the late 18th century, has embraced many identities over its lifetime, with its latest iteration housing Expanish, a Spanish language school.
Architecture and design firm El Departamento was tasked with creating a space that set it apart from its competitors without compromising the structure’s bones. “The brief was inspired by the building’s inherent character, which captured our imagination,” recalls Alberto Eltini, architect and cofounder of the Valencia-based studio.
To that end, elements such as wooden beams, vaulted ceilings, moldings, and arched doorways were carefully preserved. “More than the Renaissance architecture of the building itself, we were guided by its heritage and what it represents,” he continues.
The design also introduces vibrant, color-coded zones that reflect the local culture, such as communal tapas areas for gathering and siesta spaces for relaxation, each swathed in bold hues of burgundy, blue, or green. “The furniture encourages these types of uses—sharing a moment of tranquility or a conversation with colleagues,” adds Marina Martín, creative director and cofounder of El Departamento.
Throughout the interiors, modern details like checkered hallway flooring, playful wall tiles, and abundant indoor greenery effortlessly coexist with what Eltini calls “a building that already speaks volumes on its own.”
