The signature pink interiors of the Gallery at Sketch in London have been transformed with an opulent yellow shade by architect and designer India Mahdavi. A sunny new palette of copper tones and solar yellow fabrics serves as a backdrop for a new art program spearheaded by British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare.
“The Gallery at Sketch has been linked to the color pink for such a long time that it was very challenging for me to overcome this success,” Mahdavi says. “Yinka’s artwork was a real inspiration and enticed me to work differently in this new version of the Gallery. Now textures will transcend colors with metallic copper wallpaper, Aissa Dione’s textured fabric, and Inès Bressand’s woven wall lights. These are elements that have allowed me to extend Yinka’s artistic exploration of culture and identity and bring a warm feel of Africa to the space and furnishings.”
In celebration of African culture, 15 site-specific works animate the Gallery, including Modern Magic, an installation of five handpainted wooden masks and 10 framed quilts that replicate African masks found in the work of Pablo Picasso. New custom upholstered banquettes line the space, while soothing Mandarine au Lait shades radiate from the ceiling.
A replica model of the original pink interiors will also be displayed to immortalize the distinctive design.
