When it came time for a refresh, Accor’s midscale hotel brand Novotel called on BHDM Design to renovate the public spaces of its sole U.S. property in Miami hotspot Brickell. The locale’s distinct sunny character served as the jumping off point for the project, which included reimagining the lobby, lobby bar, retail space, lounge, and rooftop of Novotel Miami Brickell.
“We leaned into the sun, sand, and surf palette of Miami for a taste of respite,” says Dan Mazzarini, owner and creative director of BHDM Design. Shell pink, tan, copper, and white tones make up the warm color palette, while organic shapes and textures lend a “clean and sleek feel, but with subtle layers,” he adds. In the lobby, for instance, custom rugs installed atop existing terrazzo floors depict a fluid pattern that recalls the Florida sun reflecting the water, while 12-foot-tall uplit white canvas palm trees, which transform from bright during the day to an ambient glow at night, bring a touch of biophilia inside. Further, gauzy ombré draperies frame floor-to-ceiling windows and call attention to the lobby ceiling height.
Additional custom elements—like the reception desks, large-scale planters, and consoles—mix with found objects to achieve a bespoke look. “Concrete and terrazzo tables, nylon rope chairs, and hospitality-grade fabrics all mesh to create a more sumptuous palette and texture overall,” adds Mazzarini.
The tropical, blush-infused aesthetic continues across the property’s 12th floor, where the rooftop is arranged as individual spaces that recall covered living rooms. Here, a custom mural painted onsite by local artist DJ Neff provides an Instagrammable backdrop in the pool area, rounding out the live/work/play spirit of the hotel.
