Lawrence Wine Estates has introduced a new tasting room at Ink Grade, a vineyard estate in St. Helena, California. Dubbed the Pavilion by Ink Grade, the design-driven destination stands out in Napa Valley’s convivial landscape with an aesthetic crafted by FDG Design Group that reflects the singularity of the estate.
“We were inspired by the location, earth, and organic elements that visually reference the property in a subtle way,” FDG design principal Fatima Silva says. “Tapping into the sensory and visual elements was the basis for the foundation of the design, we wanted to create an intimate tasting salon experience. Our vision for the Pavilion was to pay homage to the Ink Grade motto: ‘In wildness is the preservation of the world.’”
A juxtaposition of rugged and refined elements characterizes a design that’s ripe with unexpected details. Carved wood, blackened steel, textured fabrics, and natural stone boulders sourced from volcanic “tufa” soil harvested for the vineyard are highlighted in the materiality, which is defined by organic forms echoed throughout the indoor-outdoor space. Original, locally made artwork instills a sense of place amplified by custom furnishings comprising earthen materials sourced onsite. “The design embodies the ethos of Ink Grade in that it extracts elegance from rusticity,” adds Lawrence Wine Estates CEO Carlton McCoy. “With the intention to create a respite from the outside world, the space serves as an invitation to relax, connect, and discover.”
