Wonderland, a new venture from the hospitality group behind Sichuan restaurant CHILI in Midtown Manhattan, has opened its doors in the city’s East Village.
Occupying the former Mermaid Inn space, the Sichuan gastrobar spans 1,800 square feet and offers seating for up to 70 guests. The interiors, crafted by MLC Design, are a maximalist counterpoint to the more understated neighboring Ukrainian barrooms.
Upon entry, a bar on the right boasts a stone façade, complemented by green velvet chairs and an arched liquor cabinet. To the left, seating includes intimate bird cage nooks, featuring camel-colored leather and red velvet pillows.
Ceilings and walls are adorned with lush faux greenery and Tiffany crystal butterfly lamps that create an immersive garden-like atmosphere. The walls, designed to mimic exposed brick, are enhanced with backlighting, mirrored windows, and neon signage. A dry ice cauldron centerpiece adds a touch of theatricality.
The back room offers similar seating arrangements and opens out to an intimate backyard patio that features an egg-shaped seating nook and lounge areas.
