An elegant allure runs through Rome’s Piazza Navona neighborhood, where palaces, churches, antique dealers, modern art galleries, and historical landmarks intertwine around the geographic heart of the city, the Vatican.
This noble charm is what drove design firm THDP‘s restoration of five nearby apartments. Now known as Be Mate Piazza Navona and available for short-term rental, the apartments, originally built in the late 19th century, each comprise three bedrooms, two bathrooms, living area, and separate kitchen.
The design team was influenced by many of the existing features found within the spaces, like moldings and windows with wooden internal shutters. Furthermore, “the intent was also to keep as much existing flooring as possible in order to be sustainable, and retain balance between the new and existing floor finishes while respecting the design concept,” says Manuela Mannino, founder and creative director of THDP’s Milan studio.
As an ode to the grandeur of Rome’s historical palaces, THDP leaned into a dramatic color palette, while bringing each space into the present with modern furnishings. Bedrooms are decorated with bold touches, including a turmeric velvet headboard and square gold molding on the wardrobe. The living room, meanwhile, unfolds with warm tones and curved shapes that evoke an aristocratic-yet-inviting sensibility.
Rich hues carry into the kitchen, where colored cabinet fronts, faux marble countertops, and brass fittings were installed. Here, bold 3D feature tiles punctuate white stone flooring. Bespoke lighting fixtures also harmonize with striking wallpaper patterns throughout the dwellings.
