Architecture and design firm Arcsine has completed the renovation of Carmel Mission Inn in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The boutique hotel concept was refurbished to reflect the bohemian roots of the community and reinforce the splendor of Carmel’s natural backdrop.
“Materials play off the elements while rich textiles and one-of-a-kind objects will be discovered through vintage doors, local artwork, and distinct motifs that encourage the guest to look, then look again,” says Arcsine director of interiors Elizabeth Dillon. “Unexpected-yet-memorable moments are crafted and will remain with guests for years to come.”
A new entry courtyard hosts a playful outdoor area lined with bespoke sectionals, benches, and fire pits. Custom outdoor light fixtures and lanterns also empower the space for activity after dark. Standing in for a permanent rug, a floor mosaic welcomes visitors in the lobby, endowing the arrival experience with a personal touch. Wood reception desks equipped with woven inserts are installed before a moss wall to maintain a bond with the outdoors along with natural materials as well. Shiplap detailing injects warmth across the interior as it frames monochromatic white shelving and accents a painted stone fireplace.
The hotel’s 88-seat gastropub heralds visitors with a retro-style host stand and custom millwork complete with caning and a working record player. Classic geometric floor tiles line the space below natural walnut beams that infuse a frenetic quality. A custom brass light fixture serves as the centerpiece of the adjacent lounge, illuminating upholstered, leather-like chairs and a unique mosaic floor.
