Cape Town-based architecture and design practice SAOTA has unveiled the design of the Longcheer Yacht Club in Shenzhen, China. Located on the Dapeng Peninsula, the flagship club and hotel serves as a catalyst to promote yachting culture and marine sports in the region.
The narrow footprint of the property hugs the coastline in a linear zigzag that frames scenic vistas of the setting. Reminiscent of traditional Chinese lanterns, the façade of Longcheer is detailed with a modular pattern that emphasizes light and transparency with an undulating copper-toned visual effect.
A series of four rooftop pavilions host onsite entertainment and events, gently enveloping the outdoor spaces with lightweight, floating pavilions that echo the angularity of the building’s external ribbon. The structures conjure up a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Chinese architecture, which further highlights the strong axial elements and a clear hierarchy of design. Landscaped roof gardens contrast the linear architecture in harmony with flowing lines and softened edges.
