Belgian design studio WeWantMore has completed its latest hospitality project, the first Mövenpick Hotel in Belgium.
Mövenpick Brussels Airport, a new flagship destination for Accor, is located near the city’s Zaventem Airport. Conceived by architect David Vancanneyt, the building includes 103 rooms, wellness facilities, and a rooftop restaurant.
Tapping into surrealism
A sense of whimsy characterizes the hotel’s interior, which taps into Belgium’s long and storied tradition of surrealist art. Spaces are designed to surprise guests with thought-provoking elements and unusual details, building an experience that’s equal parts theatrical and dreamlike.
A light, airy color palette—dominated by warm whites and soft blues—evokes the sensation of floating in the clouds. Sheer curtains, cloud-shaped carpets, and plush blue banquettes reinforce the ethereal ambiance, while guestroom showers are positioned under textured, illuminated ceilings reminiscent of an overcast sky.
Throughout the hotel, elements appear to levitate. Furniture and joinery are designed to look as if they’re floating, while rounded edges and soft curves add a sense of fluidity.
“Our ambition was for the hotel interiors to unite dreams and reality, and find beauty in things both unexpected and uncanny,” says Monika Jedrzejczyk, interior designer at WeWantMore.
Public spaces at Mövenpick Brussels Airport
The surrealist influence extends into the hotel’s communal areas and restaurant, where unexpected details create moments of intrigue.
Shelves are propped up by books and vases, lighting fixtures appear to be held by sculpted hands, and a bar counter lifts its “stone skirt” to reveal a polished metal interior. In the dining area, a granite block seems to hover weightlessly above the floor and distorted mirrors warp perspectives, adding to the dreamlike atmosphere.
At Magritte, the rooftop restaurant, a floating copper veil undulates through the space, mirroring the movement of wind and sky outside. A material palette of wood, copper, bronze, camel leather, and soft plaster creates a warm and inviting ambiance, and 3D-printed booth panels—textured like scooped stracciatella ice cream—offer a subtle nod to Mövenpick’s signature frozen treats.
“WeWantMore has partnered with Mövenpick to redefine the airport hotel experience, transcending the traditional boundaries of functionality and business travel,” Jedrzejczyk adds. “By thoughtfully addressing the long-standing perception of guests as merely ‘in-transit’ and focusing on meticulous details, we crafted an extraordinary and timeless aesthetic that unites dreams and reality.”
