One&Only Cape Town has emerged from a comprehensive refresh that sets a new standard for modern luxury. Located on the fashionable V&A Waterfront and overlooking Table Mountain, the tranquil luxury resort draws inspiration from the shapes, textures, and colors of the setting via a facelift by London-based Muza Lab in partnership with Kerzner International’s in-house team.
“The goal of the redesign was for One&Only Cape Town to reflect its setting, in a modern and inclusive way that celebrates Africa’s creativity and landscape,” says Hakan Ozkasikci, executive vice president of global design and technical services at Kerzner. “It was important to us to preserve and enhance an elevated residential feel that makes guests instantly at home while in the heart of the urban city.”
The entrance lobby and the Vista Bar & Lounge were revamped to better connect interiors with the waterfront setting through references to local mythology and artwork, like a sculpture by Kenyan artist Stanislaw Trzebinski that towers above the bar display. The space is also lined with handmade ceramic décor and intricately patterned carpeting that echoes the topography the city’s mountainous backdrop. In addition to local craftsmanship, Cape Town flora, which includes thousands of indigenous plant species that occur nowhere else on the planet, are woven throughout the design to enliven the retreat with unique color and focal points.
The resort’s 133 guestrooms and suites were also reimagined with new textures and organic materials to create a holistic storytelling experience. Warm lighting and an earthy color palette contrast fabrics headboards that recall the lines of in-room ceramics. In addition to homages to South Africa’s legacy as a gemstone capital, the Cape Kelp Forest is also referenced in bespoke carpeting and cushions that evoke sea forestry. Suites deviate slightly—channeling the rustic aesthetics of the lobby lounge, complete with calm neutral tones and limestone and African Ash tiles.
