The Sheraton Phoenix Downtown has reopened following a thorough redesign. The property, which is the largest hotel in the state of Arizona, has been transformed to highlight several of the brand’s new design signatures while also drawing upon the visual identity of the surrounding community. Upgrades were accomplished through a design collaboration between Dallas-based Looney & Associates and Marriott’s Global Design and Global Design Strategies teams. Baskervill executed guestroom designs as well.
“Phoenix is a city of dynamic juxtaposition, from the striking desert landscape to the thriving urban environment, creating a local culture that embraces differences and empowers a sense of community,” says Looney & Associates interior designer Sarah Bartlet. “Our design concept takes cues from the urban heritage and natural beauty alike, expressed through rhythmic patterns, tactile textures, and rich, desert earth tones.”
An expansive 19,000-square-foot lobby welcomes visitors into a holistic atmosphere anchored by the “community table,” which serves as a workspace and social area. Soundproof booths also populate the lobby, while six flexible studios wrapped in glass and set upon raised platforms are available for collaboration as well. The &More by Sheraton, one of the lobby’s main focal points, serves as a bar, café, and grab-and-go option for guests throughout the day. Overhead, a dramatic art installation reflects the influence of local craftsmanship on the renovation. “To highlight the traditional craft forms of the area in a contemporary manner, we designed an undulating sculpture of hand-woven rope, working to both anchor the space and reflect Phoenix’s local and diverse culture,” says Emily McDaniel, also an interior designer for Looney & Associates.
In addition to the Sheraton Club Lounge and fitness center, an outdoor lap pool and deck will round out amenities upon opening later this summer.
Home to 1,003 guestrooms and suites, the hotel updated every detail of its accommodations to evoke timeless comfort. Abundant natural light illuminates soft finishes and light wood tones accentuated with black metal accents. Houndstooth chairs inject a classic Sheraton pattern into each room along with crisp white bedding that accents platform beds. Noise-cancelling woven fabric panels also add character.
