In the heart of downtown Austin, the Driskill hotel has revealed 14 redesigned suites completed by locally based architecture and design practices Clayton Korte and Rottet Studio. Tasked with accentuating the whimsical characteristics of each suite, the firms elevated functionality, while establishing a unique identity for the refreshed accommodations.
“We believe that our design involvement at this Austin icon should always be tempered with respect for the history of the hotel, with an eye towards keeping it as a relevant and current part of Austin’s ever-changing hospitality landscape,” says Clayton Korte associate partner George Wilcox.
The suites’ original floor plans were updated to convey a boutique-style flair, and the spaces now boast bathrooms detailed with stained glass as well as balconies that frame views of 6th Street. Newly installed fixtures and materials infuse a sleeker sense of luxury to the historic interiors that also inspires curiosity and singularity.
The 1,200-square-foot Cattle Baron suite—the centerpiece of the onsite suites—now features opulent touches like a clawfoot soaking tub, walk-in shower, spacious living room and dining area, and a separate bedroom as well. Existing artwork and historic paintings were also repurposed for display in the revamped suites.
