Hilton has announced the opening of the Waldorf Astoria Cancun, the brand’s second property in Mexico and its first in the Mexican Caribbean. SB Architects served as the project’s design architect, while Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) crafted the resort’s interior design, which draws upon the natural splendor of the setting.
“The locale—its history and its culture—informed the design of Waldorf Astoria Cancun in a unique and modern way,” says HBA San Francisco associate Jacob Royster. “We wanted guests to feel as if they were on a journey of discovery that they’re inspired to explore further, stepping from the fine white sands into a modern sanctuary where there is a relaxed sense of luxury, seclusion, and intrigue.”
A simple materiality enlivens the property’s interiors with an organic quality, while refined details and craftsmanship further foster a sense of place. Warm tropical woods wrap spaces lined with carpeting that recalls the tides. Both raw and polished finishes abound throughout the design along with pearlescent inlays and other decorative touches that shimmer like moonlight on the sea. The signature Waldorf Astoria clock—comprising marble and mother of pearl and accented with jewelry-like rings and pearly pendulums—in the lobby heralds guests.
Sparkling blue palissandro stone echoes the jewel motif in the Peacock Alley lounge, where translucent shelving and warm metal accents round out the experience. Among the F&B options, Malpeque serves as the signature restaurant anchored by an open-flame grill and a lively open kitchen. All-day brasserie Chaya and traditional Mexican cantina JA’O evoke a convivial flair. The pool bar also serves as a social hub.
In addition to more than 68,000 square feet of meeting and event space, the Waldorf Astoria Cancun is home to a Waldorf Astoria Spa. The 40,000-square-foot wellness facility includes 21 indoor and outdoor treatment rooms, a salon, sauna, thermal area, relaxation lounges, and an outdoor spa pool and garden.
Accommodations are richly layered with textures and tonality, as well as an interplay between light and objects inspired by the dramatic shadows cast by abundant local flora. Each of the 173 guestrooms and suites boast private balconies appointed with soaking tubs overlooking the ocean, while neutral hues and supple textures install calm across the interior. Warm metal tones and glowing light fixtures filter through elegant art screens that partition the welcome seating area from the bedroom. Bathrooms span the entire length of each room, flooded with natural light and defined by a blue ombré mosaic wall. Artwork by Victoria Villasana further enlivens guestrooms through an exploration of coral textures.
