Design firm Child Studio has overhauled a 19th-century townhouse in Belgravia, London into British eyewear brand Cubitts‘ newest store. The redesign balances the site’s traditional Georgian architecture with contemporary elements.
“It was important for us to build a layered narrative for this project and to connect the townhouse architecture with the modernist ethos of the brand,” say Child Studio founders Alexy Kos and Che Huang. “We imagined a contemporary interpretation of a classic Drawing Room—an elegant living room where guests may be welcomed and entertained. We were particularly inspired by the pioneering designer Eileen Gray, who lived in this part of London in the early years of her career in the 1900s. Many bespoke pieces within the space pay homage to her work.”
Spread across the building’s ground floor and basement, the Cubitts store highlights original architectural details like refined moldings, architraves, and cornices. Original wooden floorboards were uncovered and repaired, while an antique cast iron fireplace was painted an ivory hue and installed in the store’s front room. A new dusty yellow tone adorns the walls to reflect a shade distinctive of the 19th century. Bespoke display shelves that appear like freestanding room dividers in undulating shapes were also installed. Textured wallpaper and patterned linens define the front room in contrast with mahogany and bass detailing in the back room. A sculptural table serves as a focal point in the central area, composed of a steel base, burl wood-patterned top, and a black gloss lacquered storage unit.
