Japanese outdoor lifestyle brand Snow Peak has unveiled its new U.S. flagship and headquarters in Portland, Oregon. The 15,000-square-foot property is crafted by locally based Skylab Architecture to call upon the theme of “dwelling outdoors together.”
Upon entry, guests are greeted by a two-story mural of the 62-year-old company’s founder Yukio Yamai, which spans the height of the dual-level retail space. An earthy atmosphere is expressed throughout the interior with dark stone, wood flooring, and century-old Douglas fir beams that pay homage to traditional Japanese timber framing. The second level of the retail space is home to an airy installation from Pacific Northwest-based artists, as well as a light-filled showroom and event space inspired by a close proximity to the sky. Offices are situated on the building’s third floor.
Slated to open onsite in spring 2021, restaurant and bar Takibi will be anchored by a custom soapstone hearth at the center of the open kitchen—reflecting its namesake, which translates to “bonfire.” An 1,800-square-foot patio and garden with lush bamboo will be attached to the eatery as well.
