Housed within a 13-story concrete structure in Boerum Hill, Ace Hotel Brooklyn features interiors by Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors and architecture by Stonehill Taylor. The hotel calls to mind raw art studios of European modernists and is populated by a slew of soothing and stylish custom furnishings.
The much-anticipated, ultra-luxury Aman New York debuted in August across Midtown Manhattan’s historic Crown Building. Denniston principal Jean-Michel Gathy, a longtime collaborator of the brand, led the design of the 83-suite urban retreat, which juxtaposes Aman’s signature Asian-inspired tranquility and the gilded splendor of New York.
The lush, ephemeral worlds of scenic and hospitality design combine at CIVILIAN Hotel, the theater-inspired New York hotel designed by Rockwell Group just steps from iconic Broadway. The 203-room property from Jason Pomeranc of SIXTY Hotels fame draws from beloved, bygone Theater District hangouts like Café Edison and Stage Door Canteen, as well as Rockwell Group founder David Rockwell’s own relationship with theater—as both a fan and designer of extravagant sets.
Italian hospitality company Cipriani launched Casa Cipriani within the iconic Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan. Designed by French designer Thierry Despont, the private members club boasts a unique location with views of the East River, Brooklyn Bridge, and the Statue of Liberty. Casa Cipriani comprises 47 rooms and suites—including the one-bedroom Roebling Presidential Suite, which features an 841-square-foot wraparound terrace—F&B options, and a spa and wellness center.
Hard Rock International planted a new flag in Midtown Manhattan with the launch of Hard Rock Hotel New York. Steps away from historic Music Row, the 446-key new-build pays homage to the music industry via a glitzy, intricate design by locally based Jeffrey Beers International (JBI) that’s chockablock with music memorabilia from the likes of Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, John Lennon, and more.
London’s popular members club and hotel the Ned—from the team behind Soho House—spread its wings across the pond to open the Ned NoMad. The property, which was designed by Soho House Design in collaboration with Stonehill Taylor, occupies Manhattan’s limestone-sheathed Johnson Building with 167 rooms across 10 floors and multiple F&B outlets, including a rooftop terrace offering vistas of the Empire State Building.
The century-old Jarmulowsky Bank Building at the intersection of the Chinatown and Lower East Side neighborhoods has been transformed into Nine Orchard, a 116-room hotel and culinary destination. The 83,000-square-foot, 14-floor property was revitalized by DLJ Real Estate Capital Partners and is characterized by a mix of historic architecture, elevated design, and contemporary artwork that forges an atmosphere of laidback sophistication.
Built in 1971 by influential architecture firm Emery Roth & Sons, the Park Lane New York, now operated by Highgate, is a Midtown legend overlooking Central Park. Restoring original post-war details was a priority for Toronto- and New York-based firm Yabu Pushelberg, which even repurposed historic chandeliers and sconces. Nightlife guru Scott Sartiano is behind the hotel’s three swanky venues, including the Art Nouveau-detailed Rose Lane, Harry’s New York Bar, and Darling on the 47th floor, which is the first rooftop lounge on Billionaires’ Row.
Hilton’s new urban lifestyle brand Motto by Hilton recently inaugurated its first New York outpost in the Chelsea Arts District. Spanning 42 stories, the 374-key Motto by Hilton New York City Chelsea was imagined by locally based Stonehill Taylor and draws influence from the hotel’s proximity to Broadway theaters. The hotel’s location on 24th Street also inspired the design firm to explore the theme of 24—resulting in nods to 24 hours in a day, 24-karat gold and chromium, and 24-bit color.
Found within the splashy new Manhattan West mixed-use development from Brookfield Properties, the 164-room Pendry Manhattan West is housed in a billowing Skidmore, Owings & Merrill high-rise. GACHOT, the local design studio that handled the interiors, treated the hotel as a respite from New York’s sensory overload. Consider the living room-like lobby, where guests are greeted by a limestone fireplace wall.
Ritz-Carlton welcomed its second hotel in the Big Apple this summer. Soaring 50 stories above Madison Square Park, the 250-room Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad boasts a singular, contemporary elegance crafted by an elite design team comprising Rafael Viñoly Architects, Rockwell Group, Lázaro Rosa-Violán Studio, Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, and SUSURRUS International.
New to the scene as of this summer, the Wall Street Hotel ushers in a fresh, warmer era for the Financial District. The 180-room urban retreat occupies the historic Tontine Building and is the product of a collaborative effort between development company Actium, Rose Ink Workshop, Stonehill Taylor, Charles & Co., and Pandisico Green.
The former Parker New York Hotel was revitalized and reopened as Thompson Central Park New York, marking the Hyatt brand’s third outpost in Manhattan. The property’s public spaces were envisioned by architect Thomas Juul-Hansen, while the 587 contemporary guestrooms and suites were conceived by Stonehill Taylor.
