Main Street Landing, a new concept from the restaurateurs behind Manhattan’s Due West, has opened in the Dumbo neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.
Designed by Kimberly Rodgers of Kiro Design, Main Street Landing spans two floors with an outdoor patio boasting views of the Manhattan Bridge.
The restaurant’s ground floor exudes a light and airy ambiance, characterized by a 12-seat bar adorned with organic wood rails and a 30-seat dining room with cozy corners and spacious alcoves.
“The architecture in Dumbo and proximity to the water had a major influence on the design,” says Rodgers. “The oxidation of materials is something that is prevalent throughout the space. The hazy champagne mirrors in the front window and main dining room were designed to evoke the feeling of a fog-covered sea window, while also speaking to the vintage factory glass you can see around the corner.”
She continues: “We also made a conscious choice to lean into the industrial aspect of the neighborhood. This meant highlighting our signature concrete Dumbo façade along with introducing more oxidized metals.” Concrete was utilized in the restaurant’s columns, banquettes, and valances, complemented by hardware details such as dock cleats, refined brass accents, and modern sail installations.
The movement of water became the main driver behind the design, evidenced “in the rounding of the banquettes, the sweeping shape of the stairs, the undulating millwork on the bar front, live edge tables, and even the ‘spray’ pattern on the main bar mirror.”
The previous owner of the space left behind a few stacks of milk crates, which were repurposed to create one of the key architectural features of the space—a crate wall.
The interior design yields a sense of warmth and comfort, for guests to feel “alive while at peace, where your eye may be drawn to one of the starry lights through the sails or maybe even the glimmer of the ocean through the big arched windows,” Rodgers adds.
