Stonehill Taylor puts a modern twist on classic New York diner style at NoMad Diner, a new bar and lounge inside the Arlo NoMad hotel in Manhattan.

NoMad Diner’s retro design

Central to the design narrative is the concept of modern eclecticism, weaving together textures, patterns, and colors—such as blues, greens, browns, and polished chrome—that mirror the surrounding fashion-driven neighborhood.

Stonehill Taylor drew on streetwear culture and quintessential New York diners to create playful juxtapositions throughout NoMad Diner. Concrete floors, for instance, are paired with oak paneling and sculptural chrome sconces. Retro bar stools mingle with modern bentwood chairs and leather banquettes, while a stone bar top and concrete floors are balanced by rich wood millwork and reeded details.

A continuous band of mirrors along the perimeter visually expands the space, creating depth through the contrast of light and shadow.

To enhance flow and foster an open, interactive environment, the firm removed a wall partitioning off the lobby. Slatted walnut wood panels simulate a window system to encourage both privacy and interaction as well.
