Designer Jean Nouvel has revealed concept designs for the forthcoming Sharaan by Jean Nouvel resort in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. Located in the Sharaan Nature Reserve, the resort draws inspiration from the nearby Nabataean wonders of Hegra, the nation’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to 40 suites, 14 private pavilions, and three resort villas, Sharaan is slated to debut in 2024. Nouvel will employ ancient architecture typologies and reinterpret the vernacular through a contemporary lens. The project will seek to naturally integrate the design with the surrounding landscape by employing earthen tones and rocky textures in the interior spaces. The natural palette will support sustainable living in the extremes of both summer and winter, while stone surfaces will punctuate interiors with artful, natural veining. A lift will also be created to bring guests into the heart of the reserve to showcase millions of years of geological stratas.
