Time Stops at Subterranean Bar Sotto in New York

Dark, low ceilings and custom lighting set the mood at the new amaro lounge

Sotto—a subterranean amaro bar with interiors by local firm Parts and Labor Design—is now officially open in New York’s Flatiron District.

On the corner of the landmark 19th-century Townsend building, Sotto sits beneath the recently launched Italian restaurant, Lupetto (meaning “little wolf”). Both concepts were conceived by Mark Barak, restaurateur and owner of La Pecora Bianca.

A “Mad Men on holiday” theme informed Sotto’s design approach, which continues Lupetto’s narrative of a young wolf maturing and exploring his freedom. This theme begins at the bar’s stairwell, where inlaid brass wolf paw prints are paired with low-lit, pink- and golden-hued vignettes.sotto bar new york city nyc subterranean amaro negroni bar chandelier

Sotto has an undeniable sensuality accentuated via custom-lighting elements. A showpiece velvet-framed chandelier, for example, is adorned with a squared grove of hand-dyed tassels. Triangular metallic sconces and delicate lamps illuminate the walls like jewels, while a low ceiling clad in dark burled wood creates the feeling of exclusivity and intimacy.

Custom outward-facing banquettes are styled to feel like a sofa, wrapped in a luxe pink velvet and comfortably set in a cozy nook.

“The moment you enter, you forget what time it is, let alone what number cocktail you’re on,” says Parts and Labor partner Danu Hassik. “It’s a very transporting space, which encourages guests to inhabit the current moment and focus on what’s right in front of them.”
