Valencia-based studio Masquespacio has unveiled its design for King Kong Club, a fitness center in Salzburg, Austria.
Commissioned to craft a new kind of exercise experience, Masquespacio brought founder Max Schirnhofer’s vision of 1980s techno and cyberpunk to life. “Clients, when entering, feel like they are entering a gym club from the future,” says Masquespacio cofounder and manager Christophe Penasse. “When they go to the training studios, they get contrasted by a cyberpunk feeling, which definitely gives them a very energetic outcome.”
King Kong Club is oriented into four workout areas: the LIFT strength training, the bootcamp-style HIIT concept RUSH, the boxing space BAGS, and the yoga area FLOW.
Upon arrival, guests are heralded by a range of seating and greenery planted in pots made from repurposed air conditioning pipes. Metal finishes and gray hues are offset by pastel blue notes and a blanched backdrop that further accentuates the futuristic feeling. Neon lights heighten a unique tension in the deep blackness of the training areas as well.
