Submissions Now Open for 2021 HD/West Elm Student Product Design Competition

The winning lighting collection will be produced by West Elm
Published: January 27, 2021
Hospitality Design (HD) is partnering once again with West Elm for the third annual HD/West Elm Student Product Design Competition. Current students and those who have been out of school for up to a year are eligible to enter the contest. The deadline to enter is Friday, April 16th. This year, the competition is focused on designing a family of lighting intended for hospitality and commercial spaces. The winning designer will receive a $5,000 prize from West Elm and have their product produced by West Elm. Light fixtures should be aesthetically neutral enough to fit in multiple environments, yet have a distinct design perspective and seamlessly blend into the West Elm vernacular. The collection should consist of a mix of hard-wired and portable pieces including:
  • A hard-wired sconce (Sconces should protrude no more than 4 inches from the wall to meet ADA requirements)
  • A hard-wired flush mount ceiling fixture
  • A table lamp
  • A floor lamp
Materials should be considered for both aesthetics and durability given that these pieces may be used in high-traffic or high-humidity spaces like lobbies, restaurants, guestrooms, and bathrooms.

Savannah College of Art and Design student Andrew Jacobs designed the 2020 winning entry—the Volum table collection. Laurie Sadove of the Pratt Institute was named the winner of the inaugural competition in 2019, and her chair design is currently in production. All 2021 winners and finalists will also be featured in the September issue of Hospitality Design magazine and celebrated at the 17th annual HD Awards ceremony on September 21st, 2021 at Cipriani South Street in New York.
