Taking design and cuisine cues from Spain’s Basque region, Bar Basque has opened its doors at Eventi, a Kimpton Hotel, in New York City. Artist and conceptual designer Syd Mead, whose work has appeared in sci-fi films such as Blade Runner and Aliens, is responsible for the outlet’s innovative design, while Philip Koether Architects executed the build. A color scheme of red and black with metallic accents defines the space. The glowing glass panels that backdrop the bar in the lounge area shift through a pattern sequence evolving from branches to leafy silhouette in a nod to the street-level “park” below. Offering a view of the open kitchen, the indoor dining room seats 40 with options for private dining up to 20, while the glass-encased indoor lounge accommodates 50 and is an integral focus of the design. With seating for 120, the expansive outdoor dining terrace offers guests the experience of year-round “al fresco” dining that can be transformed to indoor in seconds with the retractable windows and roof. In addition, the terrace bar and lounge overlooks the park.
