Spearhead Hospitality has announced the launch of Canal Street Eatery & Market and Afterbar, two new concepts housed inside a South Canal building in Chicago’s West Loop Gate. Spread across 11,000 square feet, Canal Street comprises an Italian restaurant and wine bar as well as a coffee and pastry counter, gourmet retail market, and cocktail bar. The adjacent Afterbar offers a sleek ambiance across a bar area and patio. DLR Group led the design of both concepts, accentuating the site’s original Art Deco features while simultaneously crafting each space with a transportive quality.
“We chose to reflect the modernity of this project and pull those local characteristics forward to result in an interpretation that feels contextual to its new surroundings,” says DLR Group interior design director and principal Staci Patton. “In our design for Canal Street Market & Eatery and Afterbar are modern touches that use artisanal-feeling materials and sweeping impressive ceiling heights that are framed with gold architraves.”
Earthy tones and visual cues from nearby parkland promote comfort at Canal Street, which reinforces the outdoors with high ceilings and expansive windows. A clean and homey aesthetic permeates the restaurant, while the marketplace was conceived to stoke curiosity and avoid repetition for an elevated retail experience.
Meanwhile, airy Afterbar is defined by refined, neutral colors and textures as well as a European flair that evokes warmth with a touch of femininity.
