Michelin-starred chef Ho Chee Boon is set to launch his latest concept, Empress by Boon, next month in San Francisco. Located on the top floor of the Grant Building in the heart of Chinatown, the elevated-yet-approachable Cantonese concept features a modern design from UK-based design studio Atelier LLYS that also honors original elements of the site’s predecessor: Empress of China.
“When we were approached by chef Ho for the design and first visited the site, we were thrilled and honored by the thought of bringing the historic Empress back to its former glory for the community,” says Atelier LLYS managing director Lily Jordan. “We knew the breathtaking city views and the special history of the landmark location would shape our design story and direct our focus to melding new and old, preserving striking antique design details with modern geometric screens, walls and artwork to create a pleasing and immersive guest experience.”
The reimagined dining atmosphere showcases original carved panels as well as the building’s restored wooden pergola, which are installed in the bar lounge. Seating is also be positioned to maximize skyline views from three vantage points.
The restaurant is set to open Friday, June 18th.
